When My Underwear Went to Paris

Three years ago, we decided to fly with the twins to visit Grandma and Grandpa in Florida.  The twins were five months old. What we were thinking, I don't know. Grandma and Grandpa did appreciate seeing the kids, so that made it worth it.

In preparation for our trip, I spent hours combing the airline's and airports' websites for regulations on what we could take on the airplane.  Could we take our car-seats? Yes, we could check them at the gate.  Could we take our stroller?  Yes, we could check it at the gate.  Thumbs up. Things were looking good.  We figured out how to pack a whole day worth of bottles and diapers and carry them through security. Everything was set.

Everything went smoothly until we got on the plane and learned that you can only have one lap baby per row of seats because of the oxygen masks. My husband and I couldn't sit by each other and the carefully packed carry-on was now a problem. We survived the flight.  My daughter screamed a good share of the descent, but we were at the back of the plane and I could barely hear her.

We easily made our way to the next gate in plenty of time. (Having a double stroller to haul our junk was a bonus.) Only then did we learn that our gate had changed.  The destination for our original gate: Paris.

Sigh.  Someday.

We arrived in Florida, tired but happy to see the grandparents. Next stop, the baggage claim. You guessed it.  No bags.

So glad we gate-checked the car-seats and carried on every necessity.

Our luggage arrived by courier the next afternoon.  I'm convinced my underwear took the flight to Paris without me.

Taking a Break

Hello, I'm taking a break from blogging this week - although not from the adventures usually told here - to finish my work in progress, Locations of the Heart. If you would like to read snippets, you can find them here.

In other news, my son may have gone 3 days without an accident. I need to double-check with my husband for sure.  And -- this is incredibly unbelievable -- my daughter announced that she had to go to the potty and actually went today!

Shocking!

I also have a recipe and a little story about how my mother taught me to count in a charity cookbook called Sweet Sunshine Baking Memories. Those who know me well may be scratching their heads about me having a recipe in a cookbook.  I promise I totally stole it from my mother so it is completely safe.  (For those who know her, there is not zucchini in it, but I can't promise that she never made it without adding a little of the green stuff.) Proceeds from the cookbook go to the Sunshine Foundation of Canada.

Hope you have a wonderful week!

It Just Comes Natural

My son discovered fishing while we were on vacation. I'm not sure what appeals to him more: the Spiderman fishing pole or being able to fling something into the water and reel it back in, just to do it again.

He spent hours on the end of the dock casting the bobber into the water and cranking it back in. (We were smart enough to take the hook off the line, especially since his aim wasn't terribly accurate, so no one risked getting caught during an errant cast.

When the guys took him fishing off the pontoon boat, he was overjoyed.  Upon return, he ran into the cabin to tell me two things:  he caught a bass and he got to pee off the side of the boat.  He may have been more excited about the latter.

Last night he was telling me about his fish again.  "It was a bass," then he flung his arms as wide at they would go (roughly forty inches) "and it was this big!"

Well, he's got the fish story part down pat.

Back from vacation

We're back from vacation and trying to get our life sorted out.  Most everything is put away.  The laundry is washed, but there are eight baskets of it to put away. How did we go through so much clothes?  And I did laundry while we were on vacation.

We took our usual trip to Nisswa, MN to visit Grandma and Grandpa.  The kids had a blast swimming in the lake and playing with all the treasures Grandma had found at garage sales for them.  My son learned to cast a fishing pole and caught his first fish.  It was one of those moments when you can't wait to tell someone something and then you remember that they have passed on. My dad would have loved it. My daughter played tea party with her cousin and danced to Johnny Cash music in the park and the Little One is a dare-devil on the slide off the dock. I got a lot of reading done: Dangerous to Know by Nell Dixon, Lifeline Echoes by Kay Springsteen, and two-thirds of Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand.  I also got a chance to write.  It's amazing how much you can get done when there isn't an Internet connection readily available.  The worst part of vacation was that I was sick with a cold the entire time. At least it didn't stop me from enjoying the sun.  I have tan lines from my swimsuit for the first time in years.

In other news, Astraea Press is having a sale through the end of the week.  Sucker for a Hot Rod is available for $1.99.  You can't beat that!

Hope you all have a great week.
