Fridays of the Wall with JQ Rose

Today, fellow West Michigan author, JQ Rose, is with us to tell us about her new horror/mystery, Sunshine Boulevard. It takes place in a retirement community in Florida and I think it is just a hoot. Be sure to check out the contest details at the bottom of the interview.

JQ: Thank you so much, Joselyn, for inviting me to your blog. I am happy to have the opportunity to share my story, Sunshine Boulevard, with your readers.

Joselyn: Who would you cast as the main characters in a movie of your latest book?
JQ: This is a fun question to roll around in my head. I loved the movie, It’s Complicated so much. I laughed so hard at Meryl Streep and Alec Baldwin. I would choose these actors from the A List to be in my movie, but as I wrote Sunshine Boulevard, I pictured it as a B movie!! The group of neighbors in one scene reminds me of a Greek chorus. The exaggerated reactions to events are corny at times and funny, so B movie material? LOL.

Joselyn: It does have an element of melodrama.  But I could totally see Meryl Streep in the exercise class. What is the most unexpected thing that has happened in one of your books?  As in you didn’t expect it to happen until you wrote it?
JQ: I didn’t realize that my main character, a 60 year old, conservative gentleman, would find himself so attracted to beautiful, young Heather, the TV reporter. He turned into an adolescent boy with raging hormones when she appeared in the scenes.

Joselyn: What one thing would make your writing space perfect?
JQ: A comfortable chair. I understand we are in the ergonomically correct era, but somehow my desk chairs don’t know that. I have three here, but after several hours of sitting, I still have a sore neck, back, and hunched up shoulders. I’m not sure if it is my fault or the chairs’. I guess I can’t blame the chair because when I get so involved when I am writing that I forget to sit up straight, adjust the chair height, and keep my feet on the floor.

Joselyn: Since we writers are all a little dependent on our laptops and computers. When the power goes out, what do you do? (Cell phone service is out too.)
JQ: Thank goodness we don’t have too many power outages, but when we do I can use my little battery operated light to read by. It clips onto a book or my Kindle. In fact, I use it every night when my hubby is already sleeping in bed. It lights up only my pages and not the entire bedroom, so it doesn’t disturb him.

Joselyn: What do you do to celebrate a book release?
JQ: Funny you should ask this question, because I just celebrated the release of my e-book, Sunshine Boulevard, on March 1. When I signed the contract with Muse It Up Publishing in June, I knew how I wanted to celebrate the release. Because the book takes place in a Florida retirement community, I wanted to go where the boomers and seniors go—to the early bird dinner at the Golden Corral Restaurant. It is a huge buffet and there is a special discounted price for seniors who arrive between 2:00 and 4:00 pm.

I invited two couples to go with us. Somehow there was miscommunication with one couple, so instead of meeting us at our house, they went on to the restaurant. We waited until after 3:30 pm, the appointed time, then finally called them to discover where they were. They were already at the restaurant. We jumped in the car and barreled over to the Golden Corral to arrive before 4 pm. We hopped out of the car and raced into the cashier. Sorry, it was 4:02 pm according to the restaurant clock above the cashier’s area. Early bird specials were not available. Huh? Two minutes? Oh well, we went on in at FULL price, an unheard of option for seniors..LOL..We had a great time and as always, ate too much.

Joselyn: The outrage!  Don't they know those seniors are on fixed incomes?! You'll have include that in a story. Perhaps in a sequel to Sunshine Boulevard. Anything else you'd like to add?

JQ: Joselyn, you asked some great questions that made me really think how to answer them. It’s been fun visiting with you.

I know you are all intrigued about what is going on at Sunshine Boulevard now, so here's the teaser:

Who or what is killing the seniors on Sunshine Boulevard?  Jim and Gloria Hart are snowbirds who annually migrate to Florida for warm sunshine, fun, and golf with friends in snow-free winters. However this season, Jim Hart, a volunteer First Responder in his retirement community of Citrus Ridge, is drawn into the investigation of the mysterious deaths. Even in the midst of the unfortunate demise of the residents on Sunshine Boulevard, the Harts try to enjoy get togethers with friends. They don't realize that their friends are getting together for their own kinds of secret affairs with each other. The neighbors are in a dither over the deaths, but perhaps more intrigued by the gossip about the affairs and why the naked lady was found lying in the geranium bed.
