Fridays off the Wall with Anne Patrick

Today, I'm hosting romantic suspense author, Anne Patrick, who was kind enough to host me on her blog in December. Her latest book is called A Familiar Evil. 

Jordan Russell had the perfect life until the brutal monster from her childhood resurfaced, opening up scars she thought were healed.  With the hope of finally finding closure Jordan leaves her cheating husband, and her career in the FBI, and returns to where her nightmare began.  But what awaits her in Thorny Creek will push her to the very edge of sanity and bring her face to face with her abductor. 

Joselyn: Sounds fascinating.   What’s one hobby readers would be surprised to know you have? Or what is the most adventurous thing you’ve done?  

I go on short-term mission trips every two years.  My first was to El Salvador.  I'd never been out of the country before and I didn't know anyone in the group I would be traveling with.  Talk about a scary adventure, I was a nervous wreck.  Especially after we learned our translator backed out on us.  Things went beautifully though, and I made some wonderful friends whom I continue to travel with every chance I get.

Joselyn: That certainly sounds like a brave adventure, especially if you aren't familiar with the language.  What is the most unexpected thing that has happened in one of your books?  As in you didn’t expect it to happen until you wrote it? 

 Oh, that happens to me all the time.  I never know what my characters are up to until I sit down at my computer and start writing.  An example from A Familiar Evil would be the killer.  I had a number of suspects but it wasn't until after I wrote a scene near the end of the book that I realized his identity.

Joselyn: So he or she was hiding from even you.  I bet that was a great ah-ha! moment.  Do you have any characters who keep bugging you for their own book? Will you give them one?  

That would be Devin, from A Familiar Evil, a ten year old foster kid who lives next door with Jordan's cousin.  The two have become good friends and hang out a lot in the story.  He's quite a kid.  He's had a tough beginning in life, but despite that he has a positive attitude because of his faith.  I do have plans for a sequel and he will play a larger role in it.

Joselyn: What one thing would make your writing space perfect? 

A new Ashley rocker recliner.  I've almost worn mine out.  Yep, that's right.  I rock and write at the same time :). 

Joselyn:  Actually it sounds pretty comfy.  When the power goes out, what do you do? (Cell phone service is out too.)  

Light the kerosene lamps and grab a pad and pen.

That's the nice thing about writing, you don't really need the fancy equipment.
